The Paradox of Data Density
How do you give users access to all that wonderful data without overwhelming them? In the world of B2B software, where data-laden dashboards run rampant, how you meet this challenge can make or break the user experience.
Here’s the paradox: the more data you present, the richer the insights -- AND the greater the risk of confusion, misinterpretation, or outright disengagement.

Don’t Wait for a Lawsuit to Do the Right Thing: Accessibility on the Web
In a world where 1 in 5 Americans lives with a disability, can businesses truly afford to leave anyone behind? Designing for accessibility isn’t just a legal obligation—it’s a moral imperative. With over 700 lawsuits filed in 2023 against businesses for failing to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) digital standards, it’s clear that the stakes are higher than ever.

Accessibility & Usability for All: Considerations for Product Development
I was speaking on a panel at Startup Week Boston, when two interesting questions came up:
“What strategies and tools do you recommend for enhancing accessibility? And are there instances when accessibility might not be a priority?”
I could’ve spent the entire time breaking down these questions, but there wasn’t time for that, which is why I’m breaking them down further here. Accessibility isn’t often well understood in the startup ecosystem, and seldom gets the time it deserves.

Challenge or Conform? Breaking the Surface as a Female Founder
In 2019, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor reported that 42% of entrepreneurs globally were women, a significant increase from previous years. Research indicates that companies led by women often outperform those led by men, showing higher returns on equity. Even when a business isn’t woman founded, startups with at least one female founder outperform all-male teams, generating 63% more revenue. So why, then, do female founders of VC-backed companies raise only 2% of the venture capital invested annually?

Optimizing the relationship between Product and UX
It was probably back in grad school, over 20 years ago, that I first came across the idea of the “three-legged stool” approach to product development. Somewhat revolutionary at the time was the notion that development, UX, and product management (all legs supporting the seat of product development) must be of equal length and strength or your stool will wobble, be unsteady and potentially fall.

Trust will make (or break) your fintech product
Humans are pattern driven by nature. Our brains form patterns to create efficiency as we navigate through an increasingly complex world. These patterns generate trust in a virtuous cycle. When we see something we recognize, our guard goes down and things feel effortless. There’s nothing more important in financial technology than building trust. It doesn’t just make a difference in how users interact with your product, it’s the difference between a successful business and one that never gets off the ground.

How to be a Responsible UI Designer in a World on Fire
As designers living in an age where brilliant minds and good hearts must prevail in order to save our world on fire, we need to use our knowledge and inspire others, creating a future where technological innovation and environmental stewardship intertwine seamlessly. I truly believe that we are right on the cusp of a huge movement, one working towards a more sustainable digital ecosystem— where progress is synonymous with preservation, and our designs serve as catalysts for positive change.

Readable Fonts - our faves!
This month we are thinking about fonts and on-screen readability.
Did you know that studies have shown it is harder for people to read on a screen than from a printed page?
Humans develop language skills naturally throughout early childhood, but reading is a skill that must be taught and studied. Many people never learn to read. Further…

MA Conference for Women
Last week YYK hosted a booth at the MA Conference for Women held in the Boston Convention Center. It was a great experience.
We talked to a ton of different people from different industries and walks of life. We saw old friends, #NerdyDiva, and got to meet some new ones, #Huck.

Transformative Lessons from the AfroTech Conference
Last month, the YYK team traveled to Texas to attend AfroTech, hosted by Blavity, Inc. AfroTech is one of the largest Black professional tech conferences. Over 20,000 people gathered for five days in Austin to learn and network from Black S.T.E.M professionals, innovators, entrepreneurs, & visionaries.

Spooktacular UX Inspiration
This fall we are increasing our focus on accessibility. For user experience practitioners and software development organizations, there is often a hard line between usability and accessibility. There are well defined government guidelines for accessibility and accessibility compliance requirements for government contracts and agencies. While something may be deemed accessible, the same product may not be usable and vice versa.

A Little UX For Your Daily Whatever
So often, those new to UX are missing an understanding of the brain science behind why certain designs work in certain situations. This term at Northeastern, I am teaching a class called The Fundamentals of Human Behaviors for Interactive Systems; which is really just a techy way of saying: Cognitive psych for product design. The curriculum was designed by a colleague, so all I had to do in preparation was read a few books to refresh my memory on these concepts that designers practice everyday – whether they know it or not.
